A distillation column is a vertical vessel that separates liquid mixtures based on their boiling points. This process, called fractional distillation, is essential in industries like petroleum refining, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and beverage production.

The Basic Principle

The operation relies on a straightforward idea: different liquids boil at different temperatures. When heating a mixture, components with lower boiling points turn into vapor first. Those with higher boiling points stay as liquids. The distillation column uses this characteristic to separate the components.

How Does It Work?

The process starts when the liquid mixture enters the column and is heated. As vapor rises through the column, it interacts with a series of horizontal platforms known as trays or structured packing material. These create multiple contact points between the rising vapor and the descending liquid. Here's how it works: as the hot vapor moves up, it meets cooler liquid flowing down. The vapor partially condenses and releases heat, while the liquid partially vaporizes and absorbs that heat. This exchange happens at each tray level. Components with lower boiling points rise in the vapor phase and collect at the top of the column as distillate. Heavier components with higher boiling points gather at the bottom as residue or bottom product. The temperature gradient in the column is vital. It is hottest at the bottom and coolest at the top. This gradient ensures effective separation, with each component condensing at its specific temperature zone.

- Feed inlet: where the mixture enters - Trays or packing: to promote vapor-liquid contact - Reboiler: heats the bottom liquid to create vapor - Condenser: cools and condenses vapor at the top - Reflux system: returns some condensed liquid to improve separation
